Principles

On the "hard-soft" scale of martial arts, hapkido stands somewhere in the middle, employing both "soft" and "hard" techniques.Hap Ki Do is based on three principles:
YU- Water : Water Symbolizes many things in Korea. It is a adaptable.Water never fights against the objects in its path. There is no conflict water moves around the objects in its path.It never loses its form. We should learn to adapt in the same way as water to survive the obstacles we all face in our life.
Won-Circle: In Hap Ki Do, the circle represents natural and continues movement. It also symbolizes the evolution of martial artists training. For as a martial artist gets closer to the black belt objective, he becomes aware that he is returning to the place that he Started, thus completing the Circle of his training. As he progresses,he starts a new circle with the advantage of the knowledge he has acquired. The new circle will be much smaller like spirals which will lead the martial artist not forward but upward.
Wha- Harmony:While traning Hap Ki Do, The simultaneous combination of body, mind and technique must always be present. The Harmony of body, mind and technique is essential to the Hap Ki Do practitioner. As the practitioner learns to attain harmony within himself, it becomes possible for him then to achieve harmony with the adversary, from there, one learns to achieve harmony within a situation. And finally, one learns to achieve harmony between oneself, theadversary and situation.

Hap Ki Do includes a vast variety of arm an leg, joint lock, weapon techniques, thow, kick , hit and nerve pressure techniques. Hap Ki Do is no martial Sport but martial art, which is outsandingly suitable for self-defense. It can be learned both by men and women, regardless of their age.
Hap Ki Do was introduced to ancient korea during the same time that Buddhism was becoming an influence in the country, approximately 372 A.D. Buddhism and Hap Ki Do together became popular throughout the country among the upper class and royal court. Evidence of this can be found in many Ancient wall and cave paintings and sculptures.Hap Ki Do techniques were reserved exclusively for the hierarchy of monks, ruling families and royal officials. Hap Ki Do flourished for many generations through many dynasties, stretching as far back as the Three Kingdom period up to the Lee Dynasty. Much like Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki Do lost its popularity around this time, the major reason being atttibuted to the collapse of Buddhism and its replacement by Confucianism.Hap Ki Do all but disappeared and was preserved as a secretelf-defense only by individual master monks and royal families .Hap Ki Do has been re-Introduced today by the father of Hap Ki Do, Yong Sool Choi, born in 1904.Yong Sool Choi studied in seclusion from the age of nine. When he came out of secluusion, korea had been liberated from Japanese after WWII. Choi taught all the Hap Ki Do techniques to a few outstanding students, who in turn took the task of popularrizing Hap Ki Do in modern Korea. Many top master toured internationally to put on demonstrations to help bring attention to Hap Ki Do. Within a few years, its popularity had grown world-wide.Today, all cities in Korea have Hap Ki Do schools. The government and military have Hap Ki Do instructors and practitioners totaling over one millon.Other countries including the U.S.A., Germany, France,Spain,China,Canada,Mexico,Argentina, and Brazil have asolid foundation of Hap Ki Do schools.
